Case Studies
Mr and Mrs O
To Separate or Not
Mr and Mrs O came for sessions after the discovery of an affair. They both agreed their relationship had been worsening for some time and that the affair had been a symptom of this. Therapy sessions with Elinor allowed them to explore their options and with the safety to be open and honest.
They learned to develop their communication skills and reflected back on their relationship timeline and the events that had led them here. When they decided to separate, they created a joint narrative to tell their teenage children and were able to work respectfully and amicably during the legal processes. They remain on good terms and can attend important family events together.
Mr J
Responding Differently to Anger
Mr J was referred by his family solicitor after the breakdown of his marriage. He felt angry and hurt that his wife had left and devastated not to spend as much time with his daughter. His anger was impacting all communication with his ex-wife and hampering his ability to instruct his solictor clearly.
Through counselling and coaching we explored his relationship with anger and how it was used to mask his feelings of vulnerability and sadness. We explored his feelings of loss and helped him find new coping strategies. Developing alternative responses to his feelings of anger allowed him to engage more healthily in mediation sessions and communicate his feelings and needs better to develop a more child centred co-parenting plan.
WHY SEEK THERAPY DURING DIVORCE?
Emotional Support
Divorce is a highly stressful time and having professional support can help get you through this, and give you the space to feel however you feel.
Grieving the Relationship
The end of a relationship can feel like a bereavement. Just as in death, it’s important to make time to grieve what has been lost.
Finding Acceptance
Without accepting the situation, we can feel stuck. Therapy can help you find ways to accept things, alongside the pain and distress.
A Neutral Person to Talk To
Talking to family and friends is wonderful but sometimes we need someone neutral to talk to, so we can explore how we really think and feel without influence.
Experience & Understanding
We have worked with many clients going through separation. We can use our expertise in this area to help you with your unique circumstances.
Moving Forward
Being able to process the past means we can help you look to the future with hope, and develop your inner strengths and self beliefs for the happiness to come.
