Online Couples Counselling in the UK

Expert online couples counselling and relationship therapy from UK-accredited therapists.

Online Couples Counselling in the UK

Coming to online couples counselling is rarely a small decision. By the time most people start searching, things have usually been difficult for a while — the same arguments looping round, intimacy slowly fading, or a recent shock that’s left you both unsure what comes next. Wherever you are with it, you’re welcome here.

At The Relationship Therapy Practice, we offer online couples counselling, online marriage counselling and online couples therapy to clients across the UK. Sessions take place over a secure video platform, with experienced, UK-accredited therapists who specialise in relationships.

When Couples Counselling Can Help

There’s no “big enough” or “small enough” reason to come to therapy. Some couples reach out after a clear crisis. Others come because something quieter has been off for a long time. Common reasons our clients book online couples counselling include:

  • Communication has broken down or feels unsafe
  • You’re stuck in the same argument on repeat
  • Trust has been broken — by an affair, a lie, or a slow drift
  • Sex, intimacy or desire have changed and feel hard to talk about
  • Parenting, work, money or extended family are pulling you out of step
  • A major life change — illness, bereavement, redundancy, relocation — has shaken your foundations
  • You’re thinking about separation and want clarity before deciding
  • You’re preparing for marriage or a long-term commitment and want to do it well

How Online Couples Counselling Works

Sessions run for fifty minutes and take place over a secure, encrypted video platform. You and your partner can join from the same room — most do — or from two separate locations if work, travel or current circumstances make that easier.

Most couples meet weekly or fortnightly. A typical course of therapy runs from eight to sixteen sessions, though some couples come for a short relationship MOT and others stay longer for deeper work. There’s no minimum commitment: you decide each step together with your therapist.

What Makes Our Practice Different

We’re a specialist relationship therapy practice — not a generalist counselling service that also takes couples. Every therapist on our team has additional training in couples and relationship work, and we match you carefully based on what you’re bringing rather than who happens to be free.

  • Specialist team across couples therapy, psychosexual therapy and divorce coaching
  • Founded by Elinor Harvey, accredited psychotherapist and family consultant
  • Featured in Psychologies, HuffPost and ITV Meridian
  • Therapists registered with UK professional bodies including BACP, NCPS and COSRT
  • Evidence-based approaches: Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, psychodynamic and systemic work
  • Inclusive: we work warmly with LGBTQ+ couples, intercultural couples, polyamorous and non-monogamous relationships

FAQ

What's the difference between "online couples therapy", "online marriage counselling" or "online relationship counselling"?

In day-to-day language, very little. “Marriage counselling” tends to be used when partners are married; “couples counselling” covers any committed relationship, married or not; and “couples therapy” emphasises the depth of clinical training of the practitioner. We offer all three under one roof, with the same standards of care, but tend to use the phrase “relationship therapy” most frequently.

Can you see me by myself if my partner doesn't want to come?

Yes, we are very happy to work with you as an individual if your partner doesn’t want to join for couple therapy. Working 1:1 means you have the privacy and space to explore your own thoughts and feelings, to understand more about your role in your relationship dynamics and to explore what changes you can make personally.

See our page on “Individual Therapy” to find out more.

How many sessions will I need?

Although we can offer one-off sessions, we generally suggest that clients attend a minimum of 6 sessions initially. All our work is completely bespoke, based on your unique needs and diffiulties. As a result it can be hard to predict how many sessions a client will need, but on average most clients attend between 12-20 sessions.

How much do sessions cost?

The fees depend on the therapist that you work with and the sort of therapy that you are looking for. We do offer some low cost therapy slot but as a rule most couples therapy sessions range from £90-£120+VAT per session. All our team are fully qualified therapists & counsellors, and members of a professional membership body such as BACP or NCPS.

Can you help us if we have a long distance relationship?

We work with long-distance couples and UK expats abroad regularly. As long as both of you have a stable internet connection and a private space, we can usually make it work — see our dedicated page for UK expats for more.

Can I attend fortnightly or monthly?

Generally, we recommend couples therapy happens weekly or fortnightly, depending on the therapist’s availability. Regular sessions allow therapeutic rapport to be established, and for you to demonstrate commitment to both the therapy process and to your relationship. Longer term clients may reduce their sessions to monthly as they move on from frequent sessions.
